According to a news story I heard this morning on NPR, plants give off methane. Not just the plants that are submerged, like in a swamp, but regular leafy plants. Apparently some scientists in Germany have discovered this through testing and their research was independently verified. From what I heard, this will be leading to all kinds of studies about greenhouse gasses in the future.
Not only was the study a surprise, but so was the AMOUNT of methane produced by plants. The scientists’ estimates are that a full third of the greenhouse gasses produced on the planet come from its plants.
It’s new information, and it sure puts a different slant on global warming. Not that it’s any less important, but it does make the issue more complicated.
