By far the best football games are the playoffs. In part because they involve the teams that have played the best this year, but mostly because everything’s on the line. The team that loses is out until next year. That makes all the players really give it their all. Whoever wins, these end up being the best ball games. Too bad they only last a few weekends.

Here’s another example of people taking a personal slight against their own perspective regardless of the true intent. This happens in all circles and from any point of view, but today I had to comment on this story I read (coming from Yahoo! News).

GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) is taking offence to Gene Shalit’s criticism of Brokeback Mountain. He referred to Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, Jack, as a “sexual predator” who “tracks Ennis down and coaxes him into sporadic trysts.” This kind of comment could be said of a “straight” movie and nobody would think anything of it. But even come across like you’re saying bad things about a homosexual and you’re in the news, accused of homophobia, and people start demanding apologies. Even if he misinterpreted the relationship and it wasn’t “predatory,” if this had been said of a straight movie, people who disagreed would just write him off. Instead it’s big news.

It’s interesting how some people get so sensitive about their perspective/preferences that they have to react loudly to anyone who even appears to talk bad about them. Or even worse, they go LOOKING for slights, real or imagined.

The way things are going, maybe it’s almost time to form a Straight White Men Against Defamation organization….
