As of July 1, the state speed limit for Indiana highways has been increased to 70 mph! Now that the holiday is over, crews have begun putting up the 600+ new signs around the rural interstates . Urban areas still have the 55 mph speed limit. I think that includes I-465 that goes around Indianapolis. It currently is posted at 55 mph, but if you go less than 70, you get passed, sometimes with dirty looks. 65 seems to be the operating minimum on that highway.

London has been selected as the host city for the 2012 Summer Olympics. I actually caught this live on TV this morning, since I had turned on the news and they were broadcasting the announcement live from Singapore. Moscow, New York, and Madrid were eliminated in the first three rounds, bringing the contest down to two: London and Paris. (Isn’t that just like European History?) This will be the first time London has hosted the Olympics since 1948, when the world was still trying to rebuild from the second World War. Paris also lost the Olympic bid for the 1992 and 2008 events. And it’s been since 1924 that Paris has hosted the Olympics.

President Bush, during his stop in Copenhagen, Denmark, before heading to the G-8 summit in Scotland, said that he will not select a Supreme Court nominee based on their views on abortion or other hot-button political issues. He urged senators to act “in a dignified way” in what is expected to be a tough confirmation battle any way that you look at it.

Lance Armstrong is riding very well in the time trials of the Tour de France, where he and his teammates set a record 35.54 mph as they won the time trial. He is on his way to a possible (and unprecedented) 7th consecutive win in this race. He has said that this would be his last Tour de France. In October 1996 he announced that he had testicular cancer, but he has survived and become a model for bicyclists everywhere. Figure: all 6 of his consecutive Tour de France wins have been SINCE that announcement. That’s not surviving cancer, that’s kicking its BUTT!!
